FAQs
What is Gillespie Primary School’s financial position?
Gillespie has an annual budget of just over £1.4 million, which approximately 73% of this is spent on salaries, in line with all public sector primary schools.
Each year, the government delegates funds to schools.
However, according to the “The latest picture on school funding and costs in England”, Institute for Fiscal Studies, March 2024, state schools in England are facing their worst decline in funding since 2010.
Some of the reasons for this include: the introduction of the National Funding Formula, changes to Pupil Premium criteria with the roll-out of Universal Credit, unfunded increases in pension and employer contributions, funding increases not keeping pace with inflation, and the recent cost of living crisis which has seen rising food and energy costs.
Should we expect parents to subsidise the school?
No. We should not.
Unfortunately, government support for schools continues to fall short. There are gaps in funding, and they are only growing.
So, the fundraising efforts of FoG supports the school to bridge those caps and continue to help pupils thrive.
Does private fundraising lead to less government funding?
No it does not. Government funding remains the same, fundraising comes as a complement given raising costs.
Who decides on the fundraising priorities for Gillespie Primary School?
Parents will continue to have the opportunity to recommend ideas, via their class reps, to be brought to the attention of the headteacher and board of Governors.
However, the fundraising needed and spending priorities will ultimately be decided by the Gillespie Primary School leadership group – the Headteacher, Board of Governors.
FoG will then determine the appropriate support to raise the required funds.
Can I choose where my donation goes?
No. While we appreciate the intention, individual project allocation is not operationally practical.
The requirements put forward by the Gillespie Primary School leadership group will always look to benefit the whole school.
So, we’re confident that any donations you make will benefit your child.
Can I be sure donations are put to good use?
Yes. Transparency is key.
We develop an annual summary of expenditure and publish it each year, along with regular updates about all of Gillespie’s fundraising efforts – grant applications, income generation from FoG Event Committee and Foundation fundraising – so you can see how these efforts help the children at Gillespie.
